The Galway Lions Club, a brief history

image preview

Lions International is a worldwide organisation with more than one million members, united in their aims under the motto “We serve”. The Galway Lions Club was formed 40 years ago, and since then has been a very active group in helping the less fortunate members of our community. Essentially, what members do is very good work, and they enjoy doing it, but none of it would have been possible without the remarkably generous support of the general public.

A wheelchair in Galway

Saturday December 3 was the UN International Day of Persons with Disability. We marked it in Galway by holding what we called a ‘Speakout,’ at one o’clock outside Brown Thomas’s, where the Christmas shopping crowds were thickest. Ten of us, men and women in wheelchairs, all ages from late twenties to over eighty, spoke in turn about the need to combat our social exclusion in the city, letting the public know the everyday obstacles we face to our mobility and ease of access.

The Athlone 3/4 marathon is taking place on Sunday October 2. With over 500 people anticipated to take part, benefitting charity Irish Wheelchair Association are looking forward to a great day out. The Athlone 3/4 marathon is a fantastic Dublin City Marathon preparation event. It’s four weeks before the city event and provides an ideal stepping stone from the half-marathon distance. Ireland’s only 3/4 marathon route is 19.664 miles and starts and finishes at the Glasson Hotel and Golf Club. The course takes in magnificent lakeside views around Lough Ree, quiet country roads, and local historical sites.

National Volunteering Day

The Irish Wheelchair Association, Logmore, Belmullet, is calling on the public to give a few hours on Sunday September 18 at 2pm to help with planting at its new resource and outreach centre. As the association members do not have funding available for this work they are hoping the public will bring a few slips and roots of plants from their own gardens and set them around the new centre. Refreshments will be provided.
